Let’s Rethink it: Lengthen on the Inhale

How does your breath coordinate with your stretching? I often hear “deepen” or “lengthen” on the exhale. It makes sense. The exhale is when we tend to let everything go and relax. We “let it all out” on the exhale.

Let’s rethink that just a little bit and try expanding on the inhale. We want to do that anyway as our lungs inflate. Our ribs should expand, etc. So why not use the inhale to utilize more space, in addition to relaxing more deeply into a pose on our exhale? I like to think of the exhale as “relaxing and gathering”.
